New York Permit & Stamping Requirements
Requirements vary by region, code cycle, seismic zone, and wind or snow load. Here is what typically drives design for New York projects.

- ✓ Plan review comment response and expediting
Exact code edition and local amendments vary by city and county. We confirm the specific requirements for your address before drafting.
Code in effect in New York
New York enforces the statewide Uniform Fire Prevention and Building Code. The 2025 Uniform Code took effect on December 31, 2025, replacing the 2020 edition, and permit applications filed on or after that date must comply with it. New York City is the major exception: it enforces its own NYC Construction Codes rather than the state Uniform Code.
What to plan for
- ✓ New York City runs its own construction codes and DOB filing process, separate from the state Uniform Code.
- ✓ The 2025 update also replaced the state Energy Conservation Construction Code, including a New York version of ASHRAE 90.1.
- ✓ Special inspection programs are commonly required on commercial filings, particularly in New York City.
Code information last verified September 2026. Codes change, so we confirm the edition in force for your address before drafting.
Frequently asked questions about New York permits
Which New York code applies to my project?
Outside New York City, permit applications filed on or after December 31, 2025 fall under the 2025 NYS Uniform Code. Inside New York City, the NYC Construction Codes apply instead, and those are on a separate update cycle.
Is filing in New York City different?
Yes, substantially. NYC has its own codes, its own DOB filing system and its own special inspection requirements. We prepare NYC filings to that standard rather than the state Uniform Code.
