Florida Permit & Stamping Requirements

Requirements vary by region, code cycle, seismic zone, and wind or snow load. Here is what typically drives design for Florida projects.

What Drives Design in Florida

Florida projects are governed primarily by wind uplift and coastal exposure.

  • ✓ Wind load design per ASCE 7 exposure category
  • ✓ HVHZ or TDI windstorm documentation where applicable
  • ✓ Site grading and stormwater drainage plans

Exact code edition and local amendments vary by city and county. We confirm the specific requirements for your address before drafting.

Current Building Code

Code in effect in Florida

Florida enforces one statewide code, the Florida Building Code. The 8th Edition (2023), based on the 2021 International Codes, is in force now. The 9th Edition (2026) is scheduled to take effect on December 31, 2026. Permits applied for before that date are generally reviewed under the 8th Edition.

What to plan for

  • ✓ High-Velocity Hurricane Zone (HVHZ) provisions apply in Miami-Dade and Broward counties.
  • ✓ Windows, doors and roofing products generally need a Florida Product Approval or local Notice of Acceptance.
  • ✓ With the 9th Edition taking effect December 31, 2026, submittal timing can change which edition your design must meet.

Code information last verified September 2026. Codes change, so we confirm the edition in force for your address before drafting.

Frequently asked questions about Florida permits

Which Florida Building Code edition applies to my permit?

The 8th Edition (2023) is in force until the 9th Edition takes effect on December 31, 2026. Generally, the edition in force when your permit is applied for governs the project. If your submittal is close to that date, tell us so we design to the right edition.

What is the High-Velocity Hurricane Zone?

The HVHZ covers Miami-Dade and Broward counties and carries stricter wind and product requirements than the rest of the state. Designs there need HVHZ-compliant components and details.
