  • ✓ Frost depth and foundation design
  • ✓ Roof framing capacity for drift loading

Exact code edition and local amendments vary by city and county. We confirm the specific requirements for your address before drafting.

Current Building Code

Code in effect in Minnesota

Minnesota has one statewide building code, the 2020 Minnesota State Building Code, effective March 31, 2020. Commercial work follows the 2020 Minnesota Building Code, based on the 2018 International Building Code, and homes follow the 2020 Minnesota Residential Code, based on the 2018 International Residential Code. The commercial energy code was updated to the 2024 Minnesota Commercial Energy Code, effective January 5, 2024. Work is under way on the next update, based on the 2024 International Codes.

What to plan for

  • ✓ Minnesota publishes its own code books with state amendments built in, including radon control provisions for new homes, so the base International Codes cannot be used directly.
  • ✓ The plumbing code is Minnesota's own, published by IAPMO, the organization behind the Uniform Plumbing Code, rather than the International Plumbing Code.
  • ✓ An update based on the 2024 International Codes is in progress, so confirm the edition in force when you submit.

Code information last verified October 2026. Codes change, so we confirm the edition in force for your address before drafting.
