Indiana Permit & Stamping Requirements
Requirements vary by region, code cycle, seismic zone, and wind or snow load. Here is what typically drives design for Indiana projects.
What Drives Design in Indiana
Indiana projects are governed primarily by ground snow load and frost depth.
- ✓ Ground snow load per ASCE 7 and local amendments
- ✓ Frost depth and foundation design
- ✓ Roof framing capacity for drift loading
Exact code edition and local amendments vary by city and county. We confirm the specific requirements for your address before drafting.
Code in effect in Indiana
Indiana's building rules are set by the state's Fire Prevention and Building Safety Commission and enforced locally. Commercial and multifamily buildings follow the 2014 Indiana Building Code, based on the 2012 International Building Code, effective December 1, 2014. One- and two-family homes follow the 2020 Indiana Residential Code, based on the 2018 International Residential Code, effective December 26, 2019 and readopted effective January 1, 2026. A new 2026 Indiana Building Code based on the 2024 International Building Code was in the state's rulemaking process at our last check, with no effective date set.
What to plan for
- ✓ Indiana's commercial code is still based on the 2012 International Building Code, several editions behind most states, so details differ from what a design firm used to the newer editions expects.
- ✓ Residential and commercial work follow separate Indiana codes with different editions, so the right one depends on your building type.
- ✓ A 2024-based update is in progress. Confirm which edition applies on the day your plans are submitted.
Code information last verified October 2026. Codes change, so we confirm the edition in force for your address before drafting.
