Frequently asked questions about Garage Conversion Plans
Do I need a permit to convert my garage?
Yes, in virtually every jurisdiction. You are changing the use of the space, which triggers building, energy and often zoning review. Unpermitted conversions cause problems at resale.
Does infilling the garage door need engineering?
Usually yes. The large opening was part of how the building resists lateral load, so closing or changing it alters the load path. We provide the framing detail and the calculations together.
Can a garage conversion become an ADU?
In many states yes, and rules have been relaxed in several of them. It depends on your local zoning, utilities and fire separation requirements, which we check before drafting.
