Frequently asked questions about ADU Permit Drawings
What drawings do I need for an ADU permit?
Most jurisdictions want a site plan, floor plans, elevations, sections, structural plans with calculations, and MEP layouts. Some also require an energy compliance form. We confirm the exact list with your building department before drafting.
Do I need a structural engineer for an ADU?
Almost always for a new detached unit, and usually for a garage or basement conversion too, because you are changing loads and creating a dwelling. The calculations are sealed by a licensed PE.
How long does an ADU permit set take?
Typically 5 to 10 business days for the drawing set, depending on size and how many disciplines are involved. Plan review at the city is separate and usually takes longer than the drawings.
